5 Special Things To Do This Month:

1. Savor Summer. Farmers’ Markets continue through October, but there’s no time like now to shop locally, eat fresh and have fun! Downtown Sacramento Markets take place Tuesdays through Thursdays, and Davis’ Picnic in the Park events happen every Wednesday evening, offering pony rides, face painting, bouncing and craft spaces in addition to locally-grown treasures. Check out our Calendar listings: August 5 & 6.

2. Play Nice. The City of Sacramento's Department of Parks and Recreation hosts organized play dates for children of all ages and abilities. Join in the fun August 7 at Southside Park (an accessible playground) in Sacramento.

3. Explore Their Universe. Give your children the chance to stargaze, glimpse the night sky through telescopes, and renew your sense of wonder, as comet discoverer Don Macholz guides you through the galaxies August 9 at the Placer Nature Center in Auburn. Also check out “Twinkle, Twinkle” at the Explorit Science Center in Davis, August 14 & 21.

4. Pet a Piano. Sacramento’s annual Race for the Arts event lets you run or walk to support your favorite organization or school program. It includes Fun Runs for kids, costumed characters, music, dancers, interactive booths, and a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo. August 22 at Crocker Park.

5. Get Informed. The Annual Access To Care Fair features free seminars on issues related to special needs, plus health screenings, resources, information and exhibits from organizations such as Autism Speaks, Canine Companions, Easter Seals and Summer House. Childcare is available. August 22-23 at Bayside Church in Granite Bay.

California’s Scenic Beauty A new exhibit featuring natural resources found “Only in California” opens today at the California Museum. Discover California’s environmental diversity through a video presentation, poetry and prose inspired by the state’s beauty. Music in the Mountains It began with 11 musicians over 20 years ago; today the festival features 250+ musicians and has grown to a three-week long event. Puzzling Problems, Scientific Solutions Solving problems is an everyday part of a scientist's job. Explorit’s new exhibit invites you to think like a scientist as you play with puzzles from various scientific fields. 2-4:30pm Tue-Fri, and 11am-4:30pm Sat & Sun, at the Explorit Science Center in Davis. Sacramento Shakespeare Festival See performances of Twelfth Night and The Tempest, plus the debut of pre-show lectures on select nights (free with admission). Picnic dinners are half the fun, so pack your favorite sandwiches or buy some of the snacks and drinks available for sale. Lawn chairs, blankets and arriving early are recommended as seating is first-come, first-served. Space: Dare to Dream Explore the history of manned spaceflight, from ancient times through the Apollo program, at this hands-on exhibit produced by Evergreen Exhibitions in educational collaboration with NASA and the National Science Teachers Association. Summer Open Bounce at BounceU Beat the heat and bounce! Kids can play on seven giant inflatables, scale spider mountain, and enjoy music and games in BounceU’s fully air conditioned facilities. Alice in Wonderland Jr. Magic Circle Theatre's Summer Teen Master Musical Theatre Project presents this zany adventure down the rabbit hole filled with marvelous music and favorite characters!
