Race for the Arts 2009
New location, same great goals: art, community, action, and fun!

By Amy Crelly

The word "community" gets thrown around a lot these days, but when was the last time you really rubbed elbows with your neighbors for a common cause or connected with other moms on your block?

Sacramento’s annual Race for the Arts is a perfect way to create a little real community. Way more than just a fun run, this Sacramento tradition (now in its 11th year) is a wonderful way to celebrate music, dance, theater, and more, all while supporting your child’s school arts program or a community organization close to your heart. Pledges are not required to participate, but with 100% of pledge monies going to help whichever program you choose, it’s a fabulous way to make a difference right where you want to, right when it is needed most.

Stop By and Say, “Hi!”
Sacramento Parent Magazine is a proud sponsor of Race for the Arts 2009. Stop by our booth to pick up the September issue, enter to win prizes, and watch the kids get creative.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed—even depressed—in the face of budget shortfalls, teacher layoffs, program cuts, and news that even beloved arts institutions like the Sacramento Ballet are struggling to survive. But together, it’s really pretty easy to make a difference. Add music, food, entertainment, and endorphins to the gathering, and the event takes “feel-good” to a whole new level.

Due to construction on Front Street, the event will move this year to William Land Park, for a shady and scenic course. Kids can enjoy Fun Runs designed just for them, plus costumed characters, entertainment from musicians, artists and dancers, as well as interactive booths, including two Instrumental Petting Zoos (with docents on hand to help kids explore).

You can pick up an entry form at Raley's and Bel Air stores and California Family Fitness locations, or register online at RaceForTheArts.com. Then pick the school program or nonprofit arts organization you want to help, and start collecting pledges. Call family and friends; enlist your Twitter followers, Facebook friends, and real-life neighbors; reconnect with the parents, teachers and administrators at your child’s school (ice cream social, anyone?), or start a friendly little competition with your co-workers or a rival school. Even the smallest contribution, when made in big numbers, can make a huge difference!
