5 Tips for Happier Camping

By Amy Crelly and Melanie Heimburg

1. Cut the cords
Make camp a cell phone/iPod/DVD/Internet-free zone — even if the camp allows electronics. “Unplugging” kids lets them really connect with things like nature, real-life friends, and new, non-electronic experiences. It also spares campers the responsibility of guarding their favorite tech toys against loss or theft. If kids resist, or you find yourself going through a little withdrawal of your own—What? No 3:15 check-in call?!—be strong! One of the best things about camp (for both kids and parents) is the way it fosters independence.

2. Think low-maintenance
It shouldn’t be the end of the world if the camp clothes you pack get stained, go missing, or get torn. Likewise, brand-new gear won’t make your camper’s experience any better. So, remember, those s’mores stains, tree branch snags, and mixed-up hoodies are badges of summer camp fun, and all the more reason to pack grubbies, buy used or dust off old sleeping bags, flash lights and canteens. The money you’ll save can help fund their next summer camp adventure.

3. Pack out what you pack in
Label your campers’ belongings to help them bring home what they brought with. Fabric pens, iron-on tags and sticker labels make it easy.

4. Break in new shoes or boots before camp
Nothing says “ouch” like a 5-mile hike around the lake in never-been-worn shoes.

5. Show you care
Care packages rule! Whether you send it as a surprise or let your camper look forward to getting one, a simple card or small care package can go a long way toward quieting any pangs of homesickness. Include a note acknowledging that you miss your camper, but keep it uplifting. (“I’m going to miss you, but I know you’re going to have so much fun!”) You might include a photo or comfort item from home (like a stuffed animal or favorite treat), or new gear for their special camp adventure (themed stationary or a new journal, cool socks for soccer camp, art supplies, or a disposable camera, etc.).
