How to Make a Superhero
(Just add cape!)

By Leisa Mayer

What child doesn’t want to be a superhero? From Batman to Spider-Man to Wonder Woman, they all get to save the day! You can help your little superhero play the part with our simple cape-making instructions. To throw a super-fun superhero party, you can make capes ahead of time for each guest.

What You’ll Need:
You’ll need to buy approximately 1 yard of fabric for each side of the cape. You can use two different fabrics or the same one for front and back. Throw the fabric through the washer and dryer before you start.

Step 1: Making the actual cape part
• Cut a triangle (38" on all sides) out of each fabric.
• Measure 9” straight down from one of the triangle tips and cut a half-circle for the neck (9” being the lowest point in your half-circle).
• Pin the two pieces of fabric, right sides together, facing each other. Stitch three sides, leaving the top circular side open.
• Once the three sides are stitched, turn your cape right-side-out by pulling it through the unstitched neck portion.
• Stitch the top closed either by machine or by hand.

Step 2: Making the tie part
• Cut a 24" x 5" rectangle.
• Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise with right side of fabric facing together.
• Stitch the long edge of the rectangle then stitch one of the short ends closed.
• Turn it right-side-out by pulling it through the unstitched end.
• Stitch the open end closed either by machine or by hand.

Step 3: Putting It All Together
• Stitch the tie piece, either by machine or by hand, to the neck edge (that half-circle end) of the cape. You want it to fit easily around the child's shirt collar. Be sure you attach it securely in order to withstand the amazing force your child will generate with his or her running superpowers!

Note: Child does, in fact, acquire the power to fly at this point!!! And you become Supermom!
